CanadaCanada is the northern neighbor for the United States, but students have many misconceptions about what life would be like for people in Canada. News stories relating to this are frequent in Flocabulary and on Newsela. Below are some example stories that students read and reflected upon.

Non-Fiction Reading Task:
Students read the news article from the blog Zoologger about the change in the Polar Bear diet. Watch the video from the New York Times about Fast Food for Polar Bears. Check out the Polar Bear videos and resources from Google Street View and the Polar Bear Tracker website. The lives of polar bears have changed drastically due to humans and our affect on the environment.

Reflection:
The students liked the articles because they were about animals. It also gave them specific and real-world examples of Human-Environment Interaction, as well as various other themes. The scientist in the Fast Food for Polar Bears video said it best, it is not humans just affecting the polar bears, it is a domino effect, and there is no saying the extent the influence will expand.
